"BEFORE All Else Fails"

The important role Amateur Radio can play in support of hospitals

For 25 years the Hospital Disaster Support Communications System has been backing up communications for the hospitals in Orange County.  Lots has been learned along the way regarding activation procedures, equipment, hospital interface, and training etc.  This presentation will look at the lessons learned and the insights gained in providing backup communications for 34 different hospitals.  Amateur Radio support for hospitals is an under served mission around the country but is one of the most important communications services we can provide to our community.  Come and find out how a well prepared, trained and educated ARES group is helping patients, before all else fails in phone outages, mass casualty incidents, and earthquakes.

What's New in Radio Direction Finding?

For decades, adventurous hams have enjoyed friendly transmitter hunting competitions. Now they are competing against other hams from around the country and around the world. See them in action in this presentation and learn how you can take part. Besides winning medals and traveling the world, RDF enthusiasts are helping police the ham bands, getting rid of pesky power line interference, tracking downed aircraft and supporting wildlife research. Hear how to do all of this with simple equipment that you may already have or can build in a jiffy. You don't have to be an electronics wizard, but your fellow hams may think you're one when they hear of your RDF exploits.

ARRL Mentoring Forum

Elmering or mentoring has long been the backbone of Amateur Radio.  While technology constantly evolves, the human interaction between hams will not be replaced and will always remain one of the hobby's strongest traditions. As licensed hams we are all ambassadors of Amateur Radio and this forum will look at ways we can welcome new hams and project a positive image of the service that will attract others.

What Energy Crisis?
The Quest for Energy Independence -- Part Two

During this presentation, Ted Schultz will explain the path he chose in his quest for energy independence. He will begin by providing some background information about his desire and ultimate decision to become free from the use of fossil fuels at his home in the sunny/windy area of Phelan, CA. He will then discuss the myriad of options (including appropriate Web sites) available to consumers in the field of renewable energy, including California’s “Emerging Renewables” program which cuts the cost to the consumer. At this point, he will explain the decisions he made to become energy independent as well as the reasons behind them. It is possible for each of us to do our part towards energy independence for this country! In addition, he will discuss how energy independence has many ramifications related to our homeland security. NOTE: If you would like further information about this topic as well as look at pictures of the solar installation, please go to the following Web site: http://www.qsl.net/n6rpg/

How to Start and Run a CW Net:
My Experiences with the Orange County Wireless Net (OCWN)

Back in 2002, KF6UEB was looking for a way to improve his CW. It came down to increasing the amount of brass-pounding time on the air. But did he have the steel nerves and Type A personality needed by an NC (net control)? And how in the heck would he be able to get a flamethrower signal out of the antenna-free city of Irvine? Over a series of meetings at a local Starbucks with other newbies and consultations with CW ops of the Orange County Amateur Radio Club, the Orange County Wireless Net began to take shape.

Rick will walk us through the steps needed to set up a net, how to publicize the net and find ops, what a typical net protocol looks like, frequency selection, handling QRM and poor band conditions with relays, use of CW shorthand and abbreviations, the top 5 NC headaches, dealing with differing levels of CW skill, publishing net session reports, and some ideas to make a net fun. He’ll also show that you don’t need a 62 foot boom up 70 feet to run a net.

This presentation is intended for:

• Ops thinking about starting or joining a CW net
• CW enthusiasts
• Newly-licensed ops looking for CW mentorship
• Anyone wanting to learn more about CW and CW nets
• People needing a rest after walking around the vendor exhibits

HF Propagation in the Sunspot Minimum

As we approach the minimum of the current sunspot cycle, widespread HF and low VHF band openings become only a fuzzy memory. While the prospects for regular world-wide communication on the HF and low VHF bands are a few years away, the time is NOW to study those factors that influence propagation over long circuits and to prepare for the next sunspot peak. Ned will provide a brief overview of the factors the affect HF and low VHF propagation and will provide some tools to predict band openings.

Ham Radio History Project

Ham Radio has an important and colorful history that needs to be saved for future generations. One approach is to use modern video or audio interview techniques to record the thoughts and activities of the pioneer ham radio operators still living - a form of oral history. This session will discuss the goals of the project being proposed by N1BN and how to use a video camera and microphone in an effective manner during an interview. Plus topics like, saving old gear and QSL cards, why do that? Bring your own ideas and thoughts to this unique hour.

Field Day in a Suitcase (or Two. . .)

Field Day is the most popular single activity in the North American operating schedule. Tens of thousands of Hams participate, in one way or another, in this exciting weekend in June. If you've every wondered about how to add some spice to your Field Day, instead of setting up the same old antennas in a hot, dusty school yard, this seminar is for you. It details the adventures of a small group of Southern California Hams who have taken to operating Field Day from exotic locations outside of the Continental United States. Organized as the Piña Colada Contest Club (KP2AA), they have learned the tricks of the trade for packing, transporting, and then erecting a complete Field Day operation from equipment carried in suitcases and golf bags. Join Chip Margelli, K7JA and the rest of the PCCC for a new look at getting more fun out of Field Day. After all, if you're in Puerto Rico, Cuba, or the Virgin Islands, just how bad can the bands really be?

Chip Margelli, K7JA

An Update on 10-Meter Activity and Ten-Ten International

Wondering where all the action is on the 10 meter band? Despite the lull in propagation, hams all over the world are making successful contacts every day! Come hear about some of the techniques you can use to fill your log with 10 meter contacts. We will also discuss recent changes and improvements in one of amateur radio’s largest organizations, the Ten-Ten International Net.

Transmitter Hunting Antenna Workshop

This workshop will be a brief talk about ARDF (Amateur Radio Direction Finding) followed by the construction of a WB2HOL Tape Measure Beam Antenna and optionally a K0OV Offset Attenuator. The WB2HOL Tape Measure Beam is quite common for getting started with ARDF in the US at this point. You can see more details (excluding the necessary choke balun) on the Joe Leggio WB2HOL web site at http://home.att.net/~jleggio/projects/rdf/tape_bm.htm. This is the same antenna we built at the Antenna Workshops in 2001, 2002, and 2003.
