Operate W1AW/6

You can either operate using the ARRL Headquarters callsign from the ham shack on the 12th floor of the Marriott during the convention - or the following week, you can fly or drive to Newington, CT. The choice is yours!

W1AW/6 will be on the air on Friday, 11AM-10PM; Saturday 8AM-10PM and Sunday, 8AM-Noon. We will have 5 stations on the air: 3 HF (SSB/CW) stations on 15M/80M, 20M, 40M with the latest and greatest Icom, Kenwood and Yaesu radios, plus a 2M FM station and an ATV station. Headsets, microphones and keyers are at each operating position along with laptop computers for logging. Roof-mounted HF antennas are 3el 20M Beam, 2el 15M Quad, 40M Dipole, 80M Dipole, 2M J-Pole, ATV Dish - and we have computer logging. For most, it's better than operating from your home station.

Operating the Special Event Station is open to all licensed amateurs attending the convention. Every operator is restricted to operating within his/her license privileges - and don't forget to carry a copy of your license just in case you are asked for it. In 2001, we had 90 operators over the convention weekend - so we know this weekend will be a blast!

W1AW/6 QSL cards can be requested from W6TKV (SASE please). We will have special QSL cards with a summary of the weekend's happenings - they will be ordered right after the convention. Within a few days of their delivery, we will answer all QSLs received.

All W1AW/6 operators will receive a commemorative certificate for their operation of the Special Event Station (mailed after the convention).

A limited supply of W1AW/6 T-Shirts (M,L,XL-$10) will be available to W1AW/6 operators.

  • How many times do you get a chance to operate a $10,000 radio?
  • How many times do you get a chance to operate W1AW?
  • How many times do you get a chance to be the cause of a pile up?
  • We will also have a "training" demonstration of Slow Scan TV, PSK31 and RTTY. The idea is to acquaint operators in some of the digital modes, show how easy it is to get into these modes, where to download the software and so on.
